If you've been browsing Pokémon TCG communities online, you've probably come across Japanese booster boxes — and wondered what makes them different from the English sets you find at local game stores. Here's everything you need to know.
What's inside a Japanese Pokémon Booster Box?
A Japanese Pokémon booster box is a factory-sealed box containing a set number of individual booster packs — typically 30 packs per box for standard sets. Each pack contains a fixed number of cards, usually 5, drawn from the cards in that specific expansion set. The box itself is shrink-wrapped and sealed at the factory, meaning the contents are completely untouched.
Why Japanese instead of English?
Japanese Pokémon sets release several months ahead of their English counterparts, meaning collectors who want the latest cards — before they're widely available in English — look to Japanese sets first. Japanese cards are also printed on slightly different cardstock, which many collectors prefer for its texture and finish. For sets like Mega Dream ex (M2a) and Abyss Eye (M5), the Japanese release is the definitive version.
Are Japanese cards authentic?
Yes — provided you're buying from a reputable source. At Pokadopa, every booster box is genuine, factory-sealed stock sourced directly. We don't sell resealed or tampered product. What you receive is exactly what left the factory.
Can I use Japanese cards in official play?
Japanese Pokémon cards are legal in Pokémon-organised play events as long as they are official Pokémon Company products — which all of our stock is. However, local tournament organisers may have their own rules, so it's worth checking with your event host.
