So here's our honest, collector-to-collector guide to buying for the Pokémon fan in your life, whether that's your kid, your partner, or the friend who won't stop talking about pull rates.
First, figure out what kind of fan they are
Pokémon fandom comes in flavours, and the right gift depends on which one you're shopping for:
- The card collector — cares about sealed product, specific sets, and condition. Sealed is king here.
- The casual fan — loves the characters more than the cards. Plush, figures, pins and keychains land beautifully.
- The new trainer — usually a younger fan just getting into it. Almost anything Pokémon will light up their face, but a first booster pack is a rite of passage.
Not sure which they are? Peek at their shelf. Cards in sleeves and unopened boxes means collector. Plush on the bed means casual fan. No shelf yet means new trainer — lucky you, everything is exciting.
Small gifts that always work
You don't need to spend big to get it right. Enamel pins are an easy win — they go on backpacks, jackets, caps and lanyards, and fans love picking their favourite character. Keychains and stationery are the same story: everyday items that let someone carry their favourite Pokémon around without breaking the bank. These make brilliant stocking fillers, party favours, or "just because" gifts.
Mid-range: plush and figures
A good plush is the most universally loved Pokémon gift there is. It works for a six-year-old and a thirty-six-year-old, and nobody has ever been disappointed by a Psyduck on their desk. Display figures are the step up for fans who like arranging a shelf — they look great in acrylic cases and pair well with a card collection.
One honest tip: quality varies wildly with Pokémon merchandise, and the internet is full of poorly made knock-offs. Buy from a shop that stands behind what it sells. A genuine plush holds its shape, its colours and its stitching for years.
The big one: sealed booster boxes
For the serious card fan, nothing beats a sealed booster box. It's the gift that contains both the fun of opening packs and the option of keeping it sealed on the shelf — many collectors treasure sealed boxes precisely because they stay sealed.
A few pointers if you're going this route:
- Japanese boxes are popular with collectors for their print quality and card texture, and they're what we specialise in.
- Ask what set they're chasing. Collectors usually have a wishlist. A quick "if you could pick any box right now, what would it be?" ruins zero surprises and guarantees a direct hit.
- Sealed means sealed. A legitimate box comes factory-sealed. If a deal somewhere looks too good to be true, it usually is — resealed boxes are a real problem in this hobby.
What to avoid
Skip loose "mystery card" bundles from unknown sellers, anything suspiciously cheap, and gifts bought from scalpers marking up hyped product.
