As Japanese Pokémon TCG has boomed, so have counterfeits. The good news: real Japanese product has tell-tale signs of quality that fakes struggle to match. Here's what to look for.
1. Print and colour
Genuine Japanese cards have sharp, clean text and vibrant, accurate colours. Fakes often look slightly washed out, overly dark, or have fuzzy edges on small text and the rarity symbol.
2. The card back
Check the blue swirl on the back. On real cards the colours are crisp and correctly aligned. Misaligned, off-colour or blurry backs are a major red flag.
3. Texture and finish
Holofoil cards have a distinctive pattern and shine. Counterfeits tend to be either too glossy across the whole card or have a flat, lifeless holo. The card stock should feel firm — fakes are often thinner or more flexible.
4. Sealed boxes and packs
- Shrink wrap. Factory wrap is tight and clean, with neat folds. Loose, wrinkled or double-layered wrap can indicate a resealed box.
- Weight and feel. Genuine packs have a consistent weight; suspiciously light or uneven packs are a warning sign.
- Print on packaging. Look for crisp Japanese text, correct set logos and a clean barcode.
5. Buy from a trusted source
The single best protection is buying from a seller who imports directly and stands behind authenticity. If a deal looks far too cheap, it usually is.
